It has been an unprecedented few weeks in Bangladesh and indeed across the world with the evolving coronavirus pandemic. We took a decision to be one of the first academic institutions to shut a few weeks ago and we have been trying to balance the need to deliver our academic programme and at the same time ensure the health and safety of our students and indeed of our teachers, admin personnel and staff. Fortunately, we have teachers who have taken on the challenge had online teaching with complete zeal and positivity and we hope to build on this expertise in the weeks and months ahead as we navigate through uncertainty. Most likely it will be a few weeks and even possibly months before things return to normal. In the meantime, we are working on engaging students virtually in all classes. We are fast tracking a training programme for teachers so they are ready with online lessons, assignments and eventually tests.
CGS has never been only about academics and at this time we would like to ensure that students, parents, teachers and indeed everyone in the CGS families are nurturing their Mind-Body-and Soul (MBS). Leaders and IT teams in each school have come up with strategies to nourish all three aspects and you will be receiving an SMS with a password which will lead you to a privacy protected online platform to engage all stakeholders, provide academic content, lessons and other activities to keep our MBS’s nourished. Kindly follow instructions to login in and access all that resources and study packs. It also contains details of group online discussions, Zoom and Google classrooms to make sure students’ stay abreast with their syllabuses, and ensure their physical and mental health stays robust in these challenging times.
School Calendar and Examinations:
The school calendar will most likely be impacted so we suggest you do not make any travel plans in the summer and around festivals, as we will release an updated list of key dates, assessments, examinations and school holidays. In addition to that, we will continue to follow the directives from the Primary and Secondary Board of Education regarding PECE, JSC and other Board matters
Global economic downturn that will inevitably follow at the heels of this pandemic will affect the CGS communities and you will be happy to learn that we are freezing fees at current levels for the next academic year. We are also very concerned about our most economically fragile stakeholders – the children and parents of our Community School who are facing unprecedented hardships and many families on daily wages are without food. We will be giving all Community School students monthly rations and in addition our alumni are galvanizing a movement to reach out to others in need. If you would like to be involved, please contact Raheel Jamal (CGS Alumni) at firstname.lastname@example.org or send him an SMS at 01300013258. In addition, each of you can be in touch via a hotline number which has already been sent to you.
As the pandemic reaches all corners of the globe, Pope Francis in his Friday sermon reminded us, “We find ourselves afraid and lost. We were caught off-guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm. We have realized that we are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented … all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other.”
We move Fearlessly Future Forward together in the CGS family boat.
Wishing you all good health,
Farhat Khan and Shereen Ispahani

Chittagong Grammar School National Curriculum
10th March, 2020
This note is being sent to you as the official news of the first cases of Coronavirus in Bangladesh being released. This is to assure you that the Chittagong Grammar School National Curriculum management has been and continue to closely monitor the emerging coronavirus situation in Bangladesh and worldwide. We will abide by any guideline and directives of the Bangladesh Government as they endeavor to restrict the spread of the virus.
Additionally, we are taking some advance preventive precautions to minimize exposure to all viruses and germs, as the wellbeing of the students is our top priority. These measures are as listed below.
• All international travel to conferences and exchange programs have been temporarily suspended till end of April, 2020 and will reconvene upon further analysis of the situation.
• CGS NC is shutting down classes of CGS NC Community School, effective as of 11th March 2020.
• All classrooms are emphasizing on handwashing and proper covering of mouth when coughing or sneezing.
• All support staff have been asked to increase the frequency of sanitizing surfaces, door knobs/handles, railings, switch boards and other daily objects that are touched often throughout the day.
• Students showing symptoms at school have been and will be sent home. Same applies for all staff members.
At CGS NC we value regular attendance at school, but it is encouraged to keep the student at home if it is suspected the child may have contracted the virus. If the student exhibits symptoms such as fever, coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, we encourage you to please seek medical help as early detection and treatment promotes a better chance at recovery and returning back to school.
Below is information from The World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control on how to reduce risk of contracting coronavirus.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when sick.
• Cover cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Recommendations for using a facemask:
o It is not recommended that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
o Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of the virus to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing nose, coughing, or sneezing.
o If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
Chittagong Grammar School National Curriculum will keep you updated on any relevant developments particularly if it becomes necessary to close the school for a period of time. We appreciate your support during this time.
